Lenition in Kuwaiti Arabic: An Optimality Theory Approach

In this paper, we attempt to analyze lenition in Kuwaiti Spoken Arabic (KSA) within the framework of Optimality Theory (OT) and following constraints proposed by Johnson (1965), Kirchner (2001), Mustafawi (2006). (2006) analyzed regarding /dʒ/ /j/ Qatari Arabic. study test universality these (namely LAZY, LAZYRime, (LAZY/[+low])Rime, * GG). We conclude that regulate apply also propose more language-specific LAZY*cc, LAZY*DL) Furthermore, lexical exceptions restrict mention three main approaches, literature, OT account for exceptions.
